In our new podcast, Brigitte Le Normand describes and interprets the main phases of migration in Europe since 1945; discusses what gendered and intersectional perspectives can reveal about labor migration; explains why a combined focus on “destination countries” and “countries of origin” is needed to understand labor migrants; and draws a preliminary balance sheet of the discriminatory, the exploitative and the more emancipatory aspects of female labor migration.
Brigitte Le Normand is an associate professor in history at Maastricht University whose research has focused on socialist Yugoslavia, urban planning, labor migration, and maritime shipping. She has just completed a global history of the city of Rijeka in the socialist era and currently heads the project “Women Migrants from the Northern Mediterranean and Work in Postwar Northwestern Europe (FeMMiWork),” funded by an ERC consolidator grant which this conversation explores.
