Background:
The Central European University’s Democracy Institute (CEU DI) is a research institute that studies issues related to de-democratization and re-democratization throughout the world. The CEU DI is based in Budapest, Hungary and is embedded in a world-wide network of affiliated academic institutions.
The Review of Democracy (RevDem) is the on-line journal of the CEU DI, and an autonomous institution within the CEU DI. RevDem publishes articles and podcasts, on subjects related to democracy throughout the world. RevDem takes an academic and critical approach to all aspects of democratization. Its current main foci are histories of ideas, political economy and inequalities, rule of law, as well as the relations between democracy and culture.
Role of the new Editors:
RevDem is recruiting three new editors to expand its geographic and sectoral reach and to work closely with the Open Society University Network (OSUN), especially with the consortium members of the OSUN Forum project. The new editors will focus on the cross-regional scholarly dialogue on development and democracy issues.
Specifically, the editors will be expected to:
- – Monitor issues related to development and democracy within and across region(s)
- – Highlight these issues to RevDem editors.
- – Lead a subject sector for RevDem in their own region, monitor issues and highlight them for other staff at RevDem.
- – Prepare and submit for publication articles, Op-Eds and interviews on relevant subjects in the field. The approach should always be informed, academic, analytical, and critical.
- – Monitor and write reviews on relevant and quality publications related to democracy and development.
- – Be prepared to initiate and implement events related to relevant issues within and across macro-regions of the world. These could be recorded debates, documentaries, or various other genres. The approach to events should always be informed, academic, analytical, and critical.
- – Build and connect to a network of people who are informed on issues related to democracy and/or development within and across macro-regions of the world. This network can be invited to write articles to offer a range of opinions on issues related to democracy.
- – Work with the assistant editors, supporting and advising on their work and training them where possible.
The editors will be expected to work 0.25 FTE on average each month and submit 2-3 contributions a month.
Desired Qualifications:
The ideal editor will be:
- – Post-doctoral graduate or senior doctoral student in a subject linked to re- and de-democratization/political economy/rule of law/history of ideas.
- – Experienced in creating text and audio content for academic journals and political journals.
- – Have a strong understanding of academic research, working methods, stylistic approach and rigorous critique.
- – Experienced at building and using networks of academic and political thinkers within the wider geographical region.
- – Experienced at working with and supporting more junior members of staff, and ensuring their development within the academic and political analytical world.
- – Fluent English speaker and writer
